How did we handle our colic babies?
With two babies behind my back and both of them had colics.
Yes, I was blessed with screaming, uncontrolled crying, with hopless feeling, try this drops try that drops, don't eat this food don't eat that food because I was breastfeeding them, carry them like this or like that, singing...... nothing work.
The oldest, my son, he did get his colics when he was 2 months old and they lasted until he was 5.5 months old.
And my dauther she did get her colics right after the birth. She was 2 days old and we had the "pleasure" until she was 2.5 months old.
With my son it was easy comparing to my daughter. He had his colic episodes every day 2 times a day for 30 minutes max. But with her it was all day long, every day. Poor baby !
And that feeling that after everything you do nothing helps. God I hate that feeling!
In the end we did find the way to help them, to soothe them.
We discovered few things;
- soft strucutred carrier ( Manduca)
- rooibos tea
- Hyland's homeopatic remedies
- white noise
What causes colics in babies?
The answer in 21th century is, brace yourself; We still don't know.
Well it's not all so black. There is a help for your little one.
Mostly they think (I mean doctors, holistic and modern medicine) that babies are crying because of excess gas in theirs tummies and intestines .
Because babies stomach and inestines are not fully developed ( it takes time) they don't have full spectrum of bacteria (good and bad bacteria, which is normal) that are ussually in digestive tract.
And that makse them feel uncomfortable and even in pain when that excess gas is passing thru intestines out.
The excess gas comes from food that is procesed in digestive tract which is not fully developed yet.
Shortly said they get little cramps ( colics) in stomach.
So how can you help your baby?
There are lots of different products out there that you can buy. I will name few of them with a brief review.
I'm going to start with what have helped us;
It is so simple to prepare it and to use it. And very healthy for mom and the baby. Very tasty also.
This tea is traditional South African remedy.
Rooibos, or redbush, tea is made from the leaves of a South African flowering shrub ( lat. Aspalathus Linearis ).
Rooibos tea is rich in many minerals such as:
- alpha hydroxy acid
It also contains antioxidants like aspalathin and nothofagin, and the extremely potent and versatile phenolic compounds.
It is caffeine-free, and low in tannins, the residue in teas that can sometimes cause digestive problems.
And one more thing this tea is great for eczema prone skin.
How to use rooibos tea, you ask?
If you are breastfeeding your baby then do only one thing and that is replace water or what ever you drink during the day with rooibos tea.
Just drink rooibos tea and that is it.
I did that for 2 months and my daughter was colic free very short after I star to drink rooibos tea. I had been drinking rooibos tea during the day and during the night also if I was thirsty.
Rooibos tea was salvation for us!
And if you are bottle feeding your little one. Then do a formula with fresh cooked rooibos tea instead of with water.
It is very simple.
Baby also can drink rooibos tea instead of watter or other teas.
I found out about rooibos tea searching through internet because everything else faild to help us. And I give it a shot and it worked!
Soft sructured carrier (SSC)
The carrier was blessing for us.
First of all SSC are very healthy to use for babies, toddler and preschoolers.
Research shows that in countries where babywearing is a normal daily activity, babies cry less and are less prone to colic. Babywearing positively affects baby’s vestibular system.
Rocking movements remind babies of rhythmical movements inside the womb.
My oldest has tried his first SSC when he was 4 months old. It was Manduca carrier. Again I will say it was salvation for us. He loved it so much. He was carried all the time until he was almost 3 yrs old. And he nursed all the time in carrier.
And my daughter she was 10 days old when she tried for the first time our SSC Manduca. She is now 2 years old and she is loves being carried. Also she is nursing all the time in carrier.
We do not use strollers. Only carriers and we have 2 Manduca carriers, 1 no name SSC, 1 Babymoov carrier and 1 Lillebaby CarryOn toddler carrier (still using it all the time).
Here I have written the review about Manduca baby carrier and where to buy them.
I love Hyland's products for babies.
They really works!
We also tried Hyland's baby calming tablets and Hyland's baby teething tablets.
These are homeopatics remedies.
This drops are with good bacteria, probiotics Lactobacillus reuteri Protectis.
The drops are expensive but effectiveness on my kids were none. I have used them on both of my kids.
They did not helped us.
BioGaia is made by Swedish health care company and a world leader in probiotics with more than 25 years experience of developing, marketing and selling probiotic products.
There are also other manufacturers.
Anti coilc drops for babies and adults.
The active ingredient is Simethicone.
Simethicone is an anti-foam preparation dissolving foam that prevents absorption of gas in the stomach and bowels. Thus enabling gas to escape naturally or to be absorbed by the bowel wall.
We used them with our oldest and they did helped us a little bit but not all the way.
Yes that is powerful thing to calm colic baby. It can be hair dryer sound, vacuum cleaner sound, blender sound, radio static sound etc...
We use it even today with my 6 yrs and 2 yrs old. And we use it for afternoon napping and night sleep.
Since they are both of them still sleeping in my bed ( yes I know.... ) I just turn on white noise (I use radio noise, no musice or anything like that, just that noise when you cannot find radio station) and they fall a sleep very quickly. Their sleep is also undisturbed with white noise. And they sleep better, longer.
I have used to that noise so I can't sleep without it.
It is really relaxing.
When they where colicly we used hair dryer and it worked like charm to soothe them quickly.
And for older one we also had CD with hair dryer sound to play when ever we needed.
Today you also have apps with white noise so you can play them on your phone, tablet etc.
There are also other remedies;
Safe, gentle and effective liquid formula of relieve stomach discomfort and bloating.
It has organic;
- ginger extract
- chamomile extract
- fennel extract
- lemon balm extract
- organic passion flower extract
You can mixed it whit breastmilk or formula.
But it works better when it is not mixed with anything and given straight out the bottle.
It is all natural herbal supplement .

Colic Calm is best working when is given "straight" out of the bottle not mixing with formula or breastmilk.
Easy and gentle bouncing on exercise ball is great thing to calm colicly baby.
I have used to bounce on edge of my bed. It also works but exercise ball is better.
Babies like continuous movement especially when they have colics. They love that rhythmic easy gentle bouncing movement because it reminds them to it while they were still in the womb.
Swings and vibrating rockers are also fantastic to calm colicly babies.
It can really help your baby to release trapped gas.
You can do bicycle legs, bent legs and gentle belly massages ( always do clockwise gentle motions when massage baby’s belly and use a little bit of baby oil for easier massage ).
We did it every day few times a day with each of our baby.
Riding in car
That is also one quick way to calm your colicly baby.
But since the the gas isn't getting any cheaper nowadays I have used one other method that has give the same results as car driving.
And that was putting our daughter in car seat and then we placed her on turned on tumble dryer.
I can tell you one more thing that IT WILL PASS. Believe me. IT WILL! But it takes time, patience and strong nerves.
After that you are going to have another battle and that's going to be babies first teeth a.k.a. teething (drooling, swollen gums, puting everything in the mouth, chewing everything, crying, sleepless nights etc....). One thing passes and another one comes. Be strong!
Take good care of your little ones they are our little angels.
